If you sell personalized products, this is the part of SellersGo that saves the most time. Instead of opening a design tool for every engraved wallet, you build a template once, tell SellersGo which parts of it are variable, and the buyer's personalization text is dropped in automatically for each order.
Where: Settings → Custom Designs
There are three things to set up, in this order: design locations — the places on the physical item a design can go; design templates — the artwork with its variable inputs; product mappings — which template and locations belong to which product.
Design locations
Settings → Design Locations, or the Custom Design Locations Pool
A design location is a physical position: Board Center, Board Bottom Right, Wallet Front, Wallet Inside Left, Knife Back, Coasters, Utensils, and so on. There is also Other for one-offs.
Add one with Add Design Location and a Design location name.
Edit or delete from the list. Deleting asks "Are you sure you want to delete '{name}'?"
Search with Search design locations.
Name locations the way your production team talks about them. If the engraver says "under the flap", call it that — not "Position 4".
2. Design templates
Settings → Custom Designs → Custom Design Templates
Create a template
Click New Custom Design Template.
Unique Design Code — your identifier. The suggested pattern is Year-Store Name Initials-Three Digit Number, e.g. 2024-PLA-001.
Custom Design Name — the readable name. Suggested pattern: Store Name-Design Name, e.g. Pera Leather Art - Design 1.
Custom Design Algorithm — how the design is produced. Text-based templates use New Custom Design With Text Algorithm.
Description — what this template is for.
Click Save Template Settings.
You will see "Design template created successfully with text algorithm."
Define the inputs
An input is a variable piece of text in the design — a name, a date, initials, a short message.
Open the template and click New Input.
Input Name — what this slot is, e.g. FirstName.
Max Length — the character limit. Set it to what actually fits on the item, not to what the marketplace allows. This is your guard against a 28-character name arriving for a 12-character space.
Input Capitalization — Uppercase Only or Any.
Character rules — Allow Alphabetical Characters, Allow Numeric Characters, Allow Special Characters.
Ignore — when enabled, this text is left as-is on the template and is not created as an editable input. Use it for fixed text that should never change.
Click Save Input Settings.
Edit inputs later with Edit Input Setting; remove with the delete action ("Do you want to delete {inputName}?").
The design editor
Open a template in the Design Editor to position and style the text. Edit Tools gives you Typography — Light, Regular or Bold — and Letter Spacing. Select an element to edit it; with nothing selected you will see "Make a selection to edit". Click Save Design. You will see "Design template updated successfully". Templates can be reordered in the list — order determines what production sees first.
3. Map templates to products
Settings → Custom Designs → Product & Custom Design Mappings
This is what makes generation automatic. Without a mapping, every order needs the design picked by hand.
Find the product — filter with Search Product & Custom Design and Filter by Store.
Click Edit Mapping.
Choose the Custom Design template.
Choose the Locations it applies to, or use Select All Locations.
Save.
You can also do this from the inventory side with Assign Custom Design and Locations on Products → Inventory.
Using designs on an order
On the order detail page, each ordered product has three design actions.
Generate Custom Design — the main path for personalized items.
Click Generate Custom Design on the line item. The panel opens as Custom Design Generation.
Check the Customer Note — for personalized products this is usually where the buyer's actual instructions are.
Pick the Engraving Design and the Engraving Location.
Fill in the Argument Value for each input. The values are prefilled from the order's engraving fields where they map cleanly.
Set Visibility per input — Show or Hide — and use Ignore to skip one entirely (this input is skipped during generation and its text is left empty).
Click Generate Design. You will see "Design generated successfully".
Review it. Edit Generated Design opens the editor for a manual tweak; Reset Generated Design starts over.
Click Save Generated Design. You will see "Design saved successfully".
If the Engraving Location dropdown is empty, the listing or product has no design locations assigned. Fix it at the product — see "Products, listings and inventory" — rather than working around it on the order.
Upload Design — for designs produced outside SellersGo.
Click Upload Design.
Choose the Engraving Place, or select Other and enter a Custom Name.
Add a Description and a Number.
Drag the file onto "Click or drag file to this area to upload". Single upload at a time.
Click Upload Design. You will see "Design created successfully".
Delete one with the delete action, or several at once with "Delete {count} designs" — that one warns "This action cannot be undone."
Download Design — click Download Design to open Download Design with every design for the line item — Number, Name, Description, Engraving Place and a preview. Download individually for production. Some file types cannot be converted for preview; you will see "Unsupported File Type" or "This file type cannot be downloaded directly." The file itself is still intact — download it and open it in your design tool.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a template for every product? No. One template can serve many products through mappings. Create a template per design, not per SKU.
The generated text is cut off. The Max Length on that input is longer than the space in the artwork. Reduce Max Length so the limit is enforced at generation instead of discovered at the engraver.
A buyer typed their personalization in lowercase but we engrave uppercase. Set Input Capitalization to Uppercase Only on that input. It normalizes at generation.
Can I edit a generated design without changing the template? Yes — Edit Generated Design affects only that order. Change the template itself when the problem repeats.
Is design generation permission-gated? Yes. Generate Design and Upload Design are separate permissions on the role. See "Users, roles and permissions".
Where do I see who generated a design? The order's History panel: "{user} generated a design." and "{user} uploaded a design."
